Refund Information
Check the status of your refund!
Expired Refund Checks Which are No Longer Negotiable
Under Nebraska law, tax refund checks (refund warrants) cannot be cashed after one year from the date of issuance because they are expired. At that point, the Nebraska Department of Revenue cannot reissue an expired refund.
How can I get my refund?
- File a notarized claim with the Nebraska State Claims Board (Board).
- From the Board’s webpage, under Risk Management – State Claims, select Uncashed Warrant Claims and choose from the appropriate documents to file.
- The Claims Board will notify you if your claim is approved or denied.
Undeliverable Refunds
Hundreds of individual income tax refunds are returned each year by the U.S. Postal Service marked “undeliverable.” If you were expecting a Nebraska individual income tax refund and did not receive it may be because:
- You have moved;
- You changed your name;
- Your address was incomplete or illegible on your income tax return;
If you are inquiring within the one year period of issuance of the refund you may send correspondence with your name, correct mailing address, Social Security number, filing status (single; married, filing jointly, etc.), and the exact dollar amount of the refund to the following address:
Nebraska Department of Revenue
Revenue Operations Division
PO Box 98903
Lincoln, NE 68509-8903
For refund warrants that are not within the one-year period of issuance of the refund, please see Expired Refund Checks Which are No Longer Negotiable, above.
