Definitions for qualifying child and qualifying degree are added to the Act.
Beginning September 3, 2025, LB 608 expanded the Act to include eligible disabled persons who were law enforcement officers or professional firefighters under the Act and their qualifying children for tuition waivers. An eligible disabled person is defined as an individual who is disabled as a result of injury or illness that resulted from or is connected to employment as a first responder and is no longer able to work as a first responder.
Also beginning September 3, 2025, if a law enforcement officer's or professional firefighter's death in the line of duty occurs after submission of a tuition waiver application, the qualifying child will not be disqualified from receiving the waiver tuition if all the other conditions are met.
Correctional officers and youth detention officers added starting July 1, 2027. LB 608 expanded the First Responder Recruitment and Retention Act (Act) to include correctional officers, youth detention officers, eligible disabled persons under the Act and their qualifying children for tuition waivers to attend the University of Nebraska. An eligible disabled person is defined as an individual who is disabled as a result of injury or illness that resulted from or is connected to employment as a first responder and is no longer able to work as a first responder.
