The Investigations Section is the Department of Revenue’s law enforcement unit and consists of commissioned Deputy State Sheriffs. “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!" Don't become a victim to any scheme that offers instant wealth or exemption from your obligation to file tax returns and/or pay taxes. Some of these schemes can literally cost you your life savings.

Taxes

• The Nebraska Department of Revenue (DOR) will never call you and ask for your birth date or social security number by phone or email.
• The DOR may ask for your birth date or social security number to confirm your identity if you contact us.
• Check your credit record on an annual basis at Free Credit Reports
• Check your Social Security records for unexplained earnings at Review Record Earnings
• If you are suspicious of a someone contacting you ask for their name and call a phone number from the DOR’s official website to confirm their legitimacy and contact information.

Gaming

• A lottery will NEVER charge you to receive a prize.
• A lottery will NEVER contact you to claim a prize for which you never enrolled.
• There is NO WAY to win a lottery prize if you did not play a lottery game.
• If you are contacted about claiming prizes hang up and locate a phone number from the Nebraska Lottery’s official website to ask about the claim.
