Overview

Nebraska provides refundable credits for community college property taxes paid after December 31, 2021. Refundable credits are also available for school district property taxes paid between January 1, 2022 and January 2, 2024. Each credit is equal to a distinct percentage multiplied by either the school district or community college tax paid.

The school district and community college property taxes paid on each parcel may be found in the Look-up Tool. The information related to payments made in prior years that qualify for the property tax credit will remain in the Look-up Tool.

An individual or entity may claim the credit by filing the appropriate Nebraska tax return together with a Nebraska Property Tax Credit, Form PTC (Form PTC) for the applicable tax year. Individuals and entities who do not otherwise have a Nebraska income tax filing requirement and who paid Nebraska community college property taxes or school district property taxes must file a Nebraska income tax return with the Form PTC to claim the credit.

If an individual did not claim the credit on their previously filed Nebraska income tax return, they may file an Amended Nebraska Property Tax Credit, Form PTCX, for the applicable year. If an entity did not claim the credit on their Nebraska income tax return, they may file an amended income tax return for the applicable year to claim the credit.

Credit for Property Taxes Paid in 2024 and after. The credit is available only for community college property taxes paid.

Credit for Property Taxes Paid in 2022 and 2023. The credit is available for both school district and community college property taxes paid.

Credit for Property Taxes paid in 2020 and 2021. The credit was only available for school district property taxes paid. The credit can no longer be claimed for these tax years because the filing deadline including any allowance of an extension is beyond the statute of limitations.
