Changes in Local Sales and Use Tax Rates – Effective April 1, 2016

LINCOLN – Tax Commissioner Tony Fulton announced today, that effective April 1, 2016, the city of Wood River will start a new local sales and use tax at the rate of 1.5%, and the city of Geneva will increase its local sales and use tax rate from 1.5% to 2%.

Local sales and use tax receipts are reported to the Nebraska Department of Revenue (Department) along with state sales and use tax receipts, and are distributed to the communities where they were collected. If sales tax is not collected on a taxable sale by the retailer at the time of purchase, the buyer is responsible for paying the appropriate use tax directly to the Department.

The Department has updated its website to provide notification of these changes under the Sales and Use Tax link. All retailers are encouraged to receive email and/or mobile alert notifications covering local sales and use tax changes by registering for a free subscription to our GovDelivery® notification system which is extremely helpful in staying current on not just local sales and use tax changes, but also for notification of any changes posted on the Department’s website for any tax program that you specifically select. GovDelivery® is a web-based email subscription management system that allows anyone to subscribe to news and information updates on the Department's website. Whenever information is updated on the Department’s web page to which you have subscribed, you will receive an email and/or mobile alert.

For detailed information about sales and use taxes, including instructions for online filing of the sales and use tax return, rates, forms, information guides, regulations, frequently asked questions, and to register for GovDelivery®, please visit “revenue.nebraska.gov”.
