Avalara is Providing Nebraska Sales Tax
Rate and Boundary Services

The Nebraska Department of Revenue is pleased to announce that Avalara, a provider of sales tax automation services, is the new vendor for Nebraska sales tax rate and boundary services.  The services provided are: (1) the rates and boundaries database for Streamlined Sales Tax beginning with the third quarter 2013; (2) the online sales tax rate finder system; and (3) a mobile app. These services use Avalara’s geolocation technology analysis to determine the proper sales tax rate within Nebraska city and county boundaries.

Specifically, the Avalara sales tax rate finder supplies rates for Nebraska addresses recognized by the U.S. Postal Service based on transaction date. It returns a validated and standardized address with all applicable state and local sales tax rates, Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) codes, total tax amount, and a confirmation code. The rate finder and the quarterly Streamlined Sales Tax-compliant rate and boundary files, downloadable from the online system, use Avalara’s geolocation technology. You may notice some improvements in rate and boundary information resulting from more precise address lookup capability.

Avalara has released a new mobile app called TaxNE. This mobile app provides the same precise sales tax rate lookup for any location in Nebraska. An added feature allows the use of the GPS function on a mobile device to find the user’s actual location and corresponding sales tax rate.

These instructions apply to both Android and Apple iOS mobile devices.

Download the app

TAXNE 1. Download the free TaxNE app:
    From the Google Play Store.
    OR
    From the Apple App Store.

Use an address

Use an Address2. From the app’s initial screen, enter the street address and city in the appropriate fields. The zip code+4 and dollar amount may also be entered (both are optional).

If a street address is unknown, the zip code+4 may be used alone.
The use of a street address with the city name provides the most accurate results.

3. The application defaults to the sales tax rate for the current date. If the sales tax rate for a different date is desired, overwrite the date displayed in the same format. The date entered cannot be in the future.

Note: Some newer Android devices use a “date picker.” Only the current date is available at this time. Attempting to enter another date may cause an error. This will be corrected in future releases.

4. Tap on “Get Tax Rate”to display the sales tax rate and local jurisdiction information.
